It’s common to hear: “I don’t need a website, my Instagram already has 100k followers and great engagement!”
That’s amazing!
Now as you’re a businessman with business mindset, I need to say this upfront: website is underrated.
Website is underrated
Social media is where people hangout.
Website is not.
Not website, not Google.
Social media is free.
Website is not.
Social media is easy.
Website is not.
There simply no reason for you to own a website.
I agree. If you think from that angle, you’re right. From that surface level..
But, before we go to the meat stuff let me ask: Do you wanna get rich? Let me reframe: Do you want your business to print money more than your daily transaction?
Read on, I’ll tell you a story in a bit.
First let me breakdown about social media for you as a business owner:
Social media have billions of people using it everyday. You can get some of them to do business with you.
But there are some problems that not many discuss:
- Meta make the rules of Instagram. And so Tencent, Google, Stan Store, Linktree, and all. Not you.
- They made features based on what they think good for their business. Not your exact business.
- Their big business decide what feature to have in the platform. Not your exact small business.
- Their platform, is theirs. Not you.
- The billions of user/customer data, is theirs. Not yours.
Can you start to see?
I could go on but let me tell you a story of James Freeman, a freelance clarinetist and coffee enthusiast.
Dollar shave club and blue bottle coffee have similarity: do differently.
Back in 2010s, companies like PayPal begin to handle recurring payment.
Subscription, no longer rely on credit cards and so more and more people “welcomed” subscription.
James, a former clarinetist & coffee enthusiast, saw this opportunity with his Blue Bottle Coffee. And so Dollar Shave Club.
Both of these company did what majority didn’t. They see an opportunity and they didn’t rely on social media to take that opportunity. Facebook and Twitter are a major platform that day but were not created to fulfill 1 or 2 entrepreneur’s needs.
So they had their website to have a subscription. (Dollar Shave Club built their own subscription while Blue Bottle acquired Tonx Coffee, one of the OG coffee subscription.)
Here I’m not talking ‘why you should have a website’ like those brands while you already have 100k followers on IG.
I’m talking about those brands, didn’t limit their potential and ideas.
I’m talking about “when your business mind have an idea for your small business, you should never let the big business dictate what you need.”
On Instagram stories, you could add sticker, poll, countdown.
That’s fun, engaging, and actually…..attention grabbing.
But, who couldn’t?
In fact e v e r y businesses does that.
How can one grabs attention, when everyone does the same?
How come dollar shave club and blue bottle shook the world with their subscription model, if all business at that time does subscription model like today?
When you have ideas, website could be built for that ideas. Not social media.
You can own your website and rule your website. Not social media.
You can print more money with website. Way more than social media.
